At the moment, you can enter a set of keywords (e.g. "cat dog old_lady"), and obtain a list of URIs of semantic documents in which the keywords appear as identifiers or in literals of classes, properties, and individuals. You can also use "jokers" in the keywords (e.g., "ca? dog*").

Search options allow you to restrict the search space to particular types of entities (classes, properties or individuals) and to particular elements within the entities (local name, label, comment or any literal). For example, you can express queries like "give me the classes or the individuals using the term car in the name or in the label".

Navigation in the results follows very simple principles. First, whenever a sign appears, it can be used to display additional information about the element it is attached with. Second, every URI is clickable. A URI is a link to a page describing either the entity or the semantic document it corresponds to, and gives access to additional functionalities using this particular entity or document.

You can make use of all the functionalities of the Watson engine through two types of open web services/APIs:

• The Java/SOAP API, a complete Java API based on a number of SOAP/WSDL services, providing complex search, querying and exploration mechanisms.
• The REST API, which provides a subset of the functionalites of Watson through simple HTTP-based access, and giving back results in XML or JSON, so that it can be used easily in any language in particular Javascript.

There are (at the moment) 3 options that can be used to restrict the search with Watson:

• Matcher: This indicates the extent to which the matching between the keywords and elements of semantic documents have to be strict. It can be either a "Word Match", meaning that the keyword has to appear as a word in the matched element, or "Exact Match" indicating that the match element should correspond exactly to the keyword, without taking into account the case and separators. For example, if "Word Match" is used, the keyword "Cup" matches "cup-of-tea", while it does not with "Exact Match". With "Exact Match" a keyword like "Cup_Of_Tea" can match "cup-of-tea". Not that "jokers" (*, ?) don't work with exact match. The results with "Exact Match" are always smaller than the ones with "Word Match". The default value is "Word Match".
• Entity: This indicates what are the entities that are expected in the result. This can be "Classes", "Properties", "Individuals" or any combination of these three values. For example, checking only "Classes" and "Properties" means that Watson should only look for documents containing classes or properties matching the keywords. By default, Watson search for any of the three types of properties.
• Scope: This indicates what part of an entity should match the keywords. The possible values here are
  • Local Name: the keyword should match the identifier of the entity, i.e. the fragment of its URI
  • Label: the keyword should match the value of the rdfs:label property
  • Label: the keyword should match the value of the rdfs:comment property
  • Any Literal: the keyword should match a literal attached to the entity, whatever is the relation
  or any combination of these four values. For example, indicating "Local Name" and "Label" means that Watson should look for documents containing entities which have a local name or a label that match one of the keyword. Note that using "Any Literal" always returns result that are bigger than when using "Label" and/or "Comment", as labels and comments are considered as literals. For example, using "Label" the keyword "tom" would match entities having a string matching "tom" as value for the rdfs:label property. Using "Any Literal", this entity would also match, in addition to others having for example "tom" in the value of properties like "foaf:firstname".
